Feature Requests
Audible Announce
It would be nice to have an audible announce system. It was speculated that if there was a cli media player that there may be a way to have MasterControl play an audio file on first entry. Members would ideally be able to upload their own audio files to have some customization similar to their IRC announce names. This would need clear rules defined so that it wouldn't be too annoying. Things like only playing once every 4 hours, being limited to 15 seconds and have an abuse report system in place.
Requested by kulps

Paging System
It would be nice to have a paging system that could be invoked from either IRC or the Master Control page to allow somebody to try and gain the attention of members at the space. There could be different pages such as "Please let me in" and "Please look at IRC" These might be themed to have noises like Navi from Ocarina. This would need clear rules defined to that it wouldn't be too annoying. Things like only paging once every 15 minutes.
Requested by kulps

Requested by kulps

Sign Out Reader
It would be nice to have a reader that could be swiped as a "sign out" to let people know that you're leaving. This would be mounted in space and control no doors, just as information for other members.
Q: What will the money be used for?
A: Primarily tools and the maintenance of tools. It's impossible to say with certainty, since donors decide what will be purchased. The idea at inception was that bigger ticket items be the primary goal and some smaller ticket items.

Q: Who decides what to buy?

Q: Is a group buy right? Will members own a portion of what is bought?
A: No. ENTS will own anything purchased from the tool fund. Money donated to the tool fund is exactly that, a donation.

Q: How are purchase decisions made?
A: There will be monthly threads in the forums to discuss what donors want to see done with the funds. Votes are decided by a 50+1 majority.

Q: How will the membership know of the Tool Fund's Health?
A: The Tool Fund's balance and recent decisions will be reported on at monthly meetings. Tool Fund discussions will happen separately, this is to ensure that the monthly meetings stay on topic. Donors will meet otherwise to decide how to administer the Tool Fund.

Q: What about training and all that other stuff?

Q: You're going to buy nothing but Garage Stuff or Electronics Stuff or or or right?

Q: Does all the money need to be spent when purchases are made?
A: After the end of the month a post will be placed in the forums saying what we have and what we could buy. Those that donated will be able to vote on what to do. That could be spend some on small stuff or wait and spend on big stuff or a combination of both. The post will be a rundown of all those that participated and how many votes they have. There will be a clear cut-off date and target for purchase as well as infomation on who's making the purchase etc. Some purchases will be very specific (such as models/sources etc. etc.) and some could be "let's spend 100-150 on a grappel gromet machine and save the rest to buy a chumyodler!
IRC Shell Server
What is this and why would I want it?
Basically, if you always want be connected to the ENTS irc channel, this is one of the best ways to do it. Some reasons one might want to stay connected would be wanting to read the channel log without having to always be connected yourself, to receive message that were left for you while you were away, to maintain a registered nick without having to worry about still being logged in somewhere else.
There's a few pretty good reasons but basically, many of us just find it easier.

If you would like to have an account on the ENTS IRC Shell Server, please contact the Network Infrastructure Committee
Once you have your account please use the directions below to connect.
What is ENTS?
The Edmonton New Technology Society (ENTS) is a non-profit, member-driven society of technology enthusiasts, hobbyists and friends. ENTS offers its members a place to create, build, repair and otherwise work on projects. ENTS first opened its doors in August of 2009 and since then has grown to be a fully self-sustaining collective of like minded individuals who come together over common interests and goals.

How does ENTS work?
ENTS is a co-op; members' monthly dues are put towards our operating costs. With the dues collected ENTS is able to provide the workspace and the supplies for our members to work.
As a registered non-profit society in the province of Alberta, ENTS is organized under and governed by a set of bylaws and policies, ratified by the membership. The current version of these documents can be viewed at DocumENTS

How can I join?
The easiest thing to do is check out our joining page and look around, ENTS offers tiered pricing to accommodate our member's financial needs.
If you'd like to visit ENTS a few time before joining you're more than welcome to. You can e-mail [mailto:directors@ents.ca directors] to book a time or jump in to our IRC channel and chat with the whole group.
Can I visit ENTS before joining?
Yes, prospecting members are strongly encouraged to attend one of our weekly project nights. HackTuesday happens every week from 6pm-10pm and it's a great opportunity to explore the space and meet the members, for more info, check the HackTuesday page.
Making Your Own Hackerspace Passports
If you want to make your own Hackerspace Passports, then please do! If you make your own then you can do it any way you want! You can call it whatever you want! You can create your own artwork! You can make it any shape you want! You can do anything you wish, since it is yours!

You can also grab the original artwork, and use it verbatim, or hack it for your purposes. The artwork is entirely free and open source. See the links, below, for the print-ready PDF, and also the source artwork.

To make 2,600 of them, I used a local printer, named Valencia Printing, on Valencia St, in San Francisco. But any printer can print these. Of course, the fewer you make, the more expensive it is to make each one. Valencia Printing used 4-color printing on the inside pages, and used thick cardstock for the cover, using navy-blue and white ink on the cover. It would be even nicer (I think) if the cover were colored vinyl, with silver or gold embossed artwork (but Valenica Printing couldn't do that for me in the short amount of time I had to get 2,600 of them made between when I had the idea in July and before Chaos Camp in August-2011).

Download the Passport artwork!
Thanks to Matthew Borgatti (@gianteye) who did all the illustration, graphic design, and proofing to bring this together. He also runs a store called Sleek and Destroy you might want to check out.

You can download the artwork for free (of course)!
Photos
The Hackerspace Passports were a huge hit at CCCamp 2011 (and around the world). Hackerspaces (and people, and geek events) created stamps, and now people can travel the world of geeky happenings and stamp their passports.

Master Control
MasterControl is the home-grown RFID system used at ENTS. Currently it controls access to the front and back doors to the ENTS space, as well as to the shop.
MasterContol consists of RFID readers communicating (using wiegand protocol) with an Arduino based microcontroler board. The 'Arduino' is connected to a computer (currently Atlas) via USB. On the computer is a Python script which provides the majority of MasterControl's functionality, together with a MySQL db backend which contains member data. In the member database as well as name and contact information, there are also fields for irc name, twitter name and nickname.
As well as controling door access, MasterControl will also announce member entrances on the irc channel (#ents) as well as the MasterControl Twitter feed
On irc it is possible to query MasterControl to get back information on doorc access. Simply send MasterControl a private message with the door name you are interested in, MasterControl will send you back a private message with the information on who last accessed the requested door. Allowable door names are 'front hall', 'blue room', 'shop', and 'any'.
eg. /msg MasterControl any

Master Control Announce
In the name of privacy, currently entrance announcements are opt-in only. Members must specify that they would like their actions announced at which point their events are announced on irc and twitter. If populated in the db, the members irc name will be used in the irc channel, and their twitter name will be used in the twitter post. Otherwise MasterControl will use their nickname, or their first name if the nickname is not provided.
In order to reduce irc/twitter congestion currently MasterControl will only announce your arrival if you have not unlocked any doors within the last half hour.

Master Control Account Log In
To view/edit your MasterControl account information, log in to the Account Manager with your blue fob number. Your password will default to your fob number as well. After logging in you can change your information and password.

Master Control Development
The source code for MasterControl is hosted on our Dropbox folder, and a sanitized version is periodically synced to the MasterControl Google Code Page.
Master Control 2.0 is currently under development, for more information please visit the Master Control 2.0 page

Stuff I do for ENTS
Directors
I joined ENTS in October 2009 and have been an active member ever since. In early 2009 I was appointed to the board of directors. In August of 2010 I was re-elected to the board and given the title President. The same happened again in 2011 and here we are.

NIC
I'm into cable. I enjoy running it and making it pretty. I ran most of the cable at ENTS with the help of Awstott and have a good idea of where most of it all goes. I've also been known to upgrade the space router to non-functioning states, so there's that, I guess...

Manage this Wiki
Most of the maintenance to this Wiki is done by myself, though I often ask for help from those who know MediaWiki better. You'll often see me managing spam and updating styles and sections. If you're keen to take this role over from me, please feel free to let me know. I do this only because it must be done, not because I enjoy it.

Stuff I do at ENTS
Annoying Project Management
It's certainly not uncommon for me to be hovering over peoples projects, given that I end up describing ENTS to people on a constant basis I'm always interested in the current projects at ENTS.
Woodworking
Though I've yet to have much time to put in to my woodworking most of the wood tools found in the shop are mine. On the magic day when I have more time to work on my own projects again I'll likely get in to the shop and start working on some bookshelves.
Sewing
The only ENTS member to make use of the sewing machines, I mend and create clothes at ENTS. I've also got weak hopes to build custom slip covers for our more expensive tools over the next year.
What is ENTS?
The Edmonton New Technology Society (ENTS) is a non-profit, member-driven organization of technology and hobby enthusiasts. ENTS offers members a place to create, build, repair and otherwise work on projects.
Our first meeting was in August of 2009 and we have been improving and building on our space ever since. In the years since forming, ENTS has grown to be a self-sustaining organization of like minded individuals who come together through projects and community.
A brief history Hackerspaces

What does ENTS do?
Per the above, ENTS provides members with 24/7 access to a lab, workshop, meeting and tinkering facilities, stocked with a variety of tools and supplies.

How can I stay on top of the wiki's changes?
There's not a lot of flags to inform members that there have been updates to the wiki. If you're interested in watching the changes as they happen, you can check the Recent Changes Special Page, this will show you the recent edits so you can check them out.
